Peter Fischli David Weiss
Peter Fischli was born in 1952, Zurich, Switzerland. David Weiss was born in 1946, Zurich Switzerland and passed away in 2012. They won the Golden Lion Prize at Venice Biennale in 2013.
Their selected exhibitions include “Flowers & Questions, A Retrospective” at Tate Modern (London) in 2006-2007, Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (Paris) in 2007, “Are Animals People?“ at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Madrid). In 2009. Their retrospective exhibition “How to Work Better“ was held at Guggenheim Museum (NY) in 2016.
Fischli and Weiss are the artists who are well known for their unique approach to break our common sense and stereotypes, suggesting us the different view point of the world. With their acute insights, they focused on the hidden unexpectedness and contradiction in our tranquil casual everyday life to reveal the essence of human society, ironically and playfully.
This exhibition features photographs series, “Fotografias”. Each works consisted of 6 postcard size photographs, depicting various images, for example cat, human, vehicle, plants, universe and so on.
While those are simply photographed the colorful illustrations on exterior walls of pleasure grounds, controlling exposure and monochrome colors, the artists show us the different imaginary sights and even the inner sights of human, such as dream and horror. The comic images that surround us in the commercial buildings or amusement facilities turned to traumatic depressed images. The theme of this works may be affected by the realm of Swiss historical psychoanalysis, typified by Carl Gustav Jung.
The retrospective exhibition of Fischli Weiss at Guggenheim Museum in 2016 is still fresh in our mind and the artists are being evaluated prize at present. Even now, their works are grasping the essense of the common world with familiar materials and kitsch approaches to bring us the idea of new sense of values.
