This exhibition makes the 2nd presentation of the artist in our gallery.
Bandai’s activity can be seen as if he tries to create his own “myth” on his own base, as the artist once said that he recognized the world through making the art works. As the globalization has pushed on fast, the borders of culture, people, religion and the state has been blared and we lost the “myth” which is the base of our own identity. The artist presents not the answer of this issue, but the artist’s works are constructed of images and texts of existence and the creation of the context of fragments of the memory are searching for the myth.
The main series that consist this exhibition is “A collector B” series, which show photographs of sculptures by found materials and taken by a scanner.
In the exhibition room, these objects are also displayed floating in the aquarium. Through this installation, the artist shows the audience “the present time”, in contrast to the photograph, a media which only shows a moment in the past. This is Bandai‘s new approach to challenge the materiality and definition of photographs.
New works from his representative series, “the lid on the hole” are also exhibited in this show. The artist started making this series from 2006 through 2008. It depicts sculptures made of illegally disposed garbage. Bandai resume this series since 2015, as shooting them in the highlands where are the low atmospheric pressure areas. This approach depends on a theory that the sacred places are often located in heights where the atmospheric pressure is the same as the pressure in a womb.
Bandai also presents other constant movie series “Communication by 100 pictures”. The new work’s theme is based on a survey of the memory of the birth with mother and child.
Treating “Time” as an aspect of phenomenon, the artist presents a new “myth” fantasy which bonds to the primitive memories of the audiences.
